European Certificate (WG10)

The European Certificate in Medical Genetics (ECMGG) is the first European diploma in medical genetics. It is a joint development of the UEMS Section of Medical Genetics (UEMS-SMG) and the Branch of Medical Genetics and Genomics of the European Board of Medical Genetics (EBMG-BMGG), and has the support of the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG).

ITHACA has been supporting the ECMGG since 2023. The ERN is responsible for the organisation of the exam’s preparatory meetings, and is involved through the participation of its Coordinator, Prof. Alain Verloes, in the ECMGG Board.

History

Following a pilot examination held in Milan in June 2018, the first full examinations took place in June 2019, as a satellite event of the European Human Genetics Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden. Then, from 2021, the ECMGG examination has been successfully delivered annually as a virtual (online) examination in cooperation with a commercial provider (CYIM, Rennes, France).

The examination is overseen and supervised by the ECMGG Examination Committee of the UEMS-SMG. It is not restricted to European candidates, although priority will be given to candidates from European nations which are members of the UEMS Section of Medical Genetics.

Functionning

The examination is held at the end of each scholar year, and is fully online.

It consists of two sessions: one written session with 110 multiple choice questions, and one oral session with six structured oral assessments, set up as OSCE-style stations.

Check below some examples of these two types of questions:

ECMGG Sample Structured Oral Assessment (SOA) (pdf)

The ECMGG is valid for practice only in countries where it is ratified as an official certificate for this purpose by national regulatory bodies or organisations.

Registration for the 2025 session is open until January 2025 on the ECMGG website.
